Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the effect of the metaphorical thinking approach based on the project method on students’ mathematical literacy in terms of their thinking styles. This research is motivated by the low level of students’ mathematical literacy as indicated by preliminary study results, as well as the dominance of conventional learning that is less connected to real-life contexts. Therefore, an appropriate learning approach is needed to help students understand abstract mathematical concepts in a more concrete and meaningful way. This study employed a quantitative method with a quasiexperimental design and was analyzed using two-way ANAVA. The population of this research was seventh-grade students of SMP 19 Bandar Lampung, with samples selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used were a mathematical literacy test and a thinking style questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed to determine the effects of the learning approach and thinking styles on students’ mathematical literacy. The results showed that there is a significant effect of the metaphorical thinking approach based on the project method on student’ mathematical literacy, and there is also an effect of thinking styles on mathematical literacy. However, there is no interaction between the learning approach and thinking styles on students’’ mathematical literacy. Thus, the metaphorical thinking approach based on the project method can be considered an effective alternative to improve students’ mathematical literacy.
