Abstract

ABSTRACT Language Styles is one of the main subjects in sociolinguistic studies. When someone interacts with the others, there are differences between each other. These are commonly seen from different ethnic background, situations, goals and some more. This research discusses language styles used by the main and supporting characters in Legally Blonde movie by Amanda Brown. The aims of this research are to described kinds of language styles, characters and characterizations, also factors that can cause different language styles. The data are taken from the utterances of the main and supporting characters in Legally Blonde movie. The research method used qualitative research design to know the data and approach people in a form of a text. In conclusion, the researcher concludes that are ; Firstly, all types of language style were used by the main and supporting characters. From the data collected, the researcher found 157 utterances that include in language style. Then, for the main characters the highest percentage is in the casual style with 28%. The second, consultative style with the percentage 21% or 24 data. Third, the highest result also in intimate and formal style that have the same result 19 data or 18%, and the last was frozen style with 16 data or 15%. In addition, there are two important points about the factors which influencing the main and supporting characters. Setting is important point in use the language style. Moreover, participant is also most importat thing in use the language style. If the hearer is someone who have high position automatically the speaker will use formal style. Afterwards, if the hearer is someone who have close relationship automatically the speaker will use casual or intimate style.
