Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the impact of YouTube use on the quality of student vocabulary learning in the digital era at SMPN 1 Sekampung Udik. This study employed a qualitative case study method involving Grade VIII A students as the research participants. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation to obtain an in-depth understanding of students’ learning experiences when using YouTube as a learning medium. The collected data were analyzed using the interactive model of data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification to ensure the validity and reliability of the findings. The results of the study reveal that YouTube has a significant positive impact on students’ vocabulary learning. It helps students improve their vocabulary mastery by providing contextual examples, visual illustrations, and authentic pronunciation from native speakers. In addition, YouTube increases students’ learning motivation, encourages active participation during classroom activities, enhances pronunciation skills, and creates a more enjoyable and interactive learning environment. Students also reported that learning through videos made it easier to understand the meaning and usage of new vocabulary in real-life situations. However, several negative impacts were also identified. Some students experienced decreased concentration due to videos that were too long, advertisements that interrupted the learning process, and the tendency to become distracted by unrelated video recommendations. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that YouTube is an effective learning medium for vocabulary instruction when it is integrated appropriately into classroom activities and used under teacher supervision. Teachers play an essential role in selecting suitable educational videos, managing learning activities, and guiding students to remain focused on learning objectives. Therefore, proper guidance and well-planned implementation are necessary to maximize the educational benefits of YouTube while minimizing its potential negative effects on students’ vocabulary learning quality in the digital era.
