Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyse the English speaking skills of students in urban and rural areas and to identify the factors influencing the differences between them. The study focused on linguistic aspects, including fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, as well as non-linguistic aspects such as self-confidence, motivation, and participation. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. The research was conducted at SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung (urban area) and SMPN 1 Ulu Belu (rural area) in Lampung Province. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with students and English teachers, classroom observations, and documentation. The data were analysed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by source and method triangulation. The findings indicated that students in urban schools demonstrated better speaking skills than those in rural schools. Urban students showed higher fluency, broader vocabulary mastery, clearer pronunciation, and greater participation in speaking activities. They also exhibited higher levels of self-confidence, although some grammatical and pronunciation errors remained. In contrast, rural students had limited vocabulary, lower fluency, less accurate pronunciation, and lower confidence when speaking English. The differences were influenced by the learning environment, availability of learning facilities and technology, teaching methods, exposure to English, opportunities for speaking practice, parental support, and learning motivation. The study suggests improving learning facilities, access to technology, and communicative speaking activities, particularly in rural schools, to enhance students‟ English speaking skills and reduce the gap between urban and rural areas. Keywords : Communicative learning, English speaking skills, Learning environment, Urban and Rural students.
