Abstract

ABSTRACT Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that studies meaning in context, including how language is used in communication. One of the important topics in pragmatics is deixis, which refers to expressions whose meanings depend on the context of utterance. This research aims to identify the types of deixis used in the English teaching and learning process at SMP Negeri 18 Bandar Lampung and to analyze the meanings of the deictic expressions used by teachers and students during classroom interaction. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through classroom observation, interviews, and video recordings of the English teaching and learning process. The analysis applied George Yule’s theory of deixis, focusing on person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that three types of deixis were used in classroom interaction. Person deixis was the most dominant type, followed by temporal deixis and spatial deixis. Person deixis frequently appeared through the use of the pronouns I, me, my, we, us, our, you, your, she, he, it, and them used by the teacher and students in communication, reflecting the direct interaction. Temporal deixis was identified through expressions such as now, today, yesterday, three days ago, last meeting, and later, which referred to present, past, and future time depending on the context. Spatial deixis was found through expressions such as here, this, that, and in front of, which referred to locations or objects in the classroom based on the speaker’s position. The use of deixis helped participants identify people, places, and time references during the teaching and learning process, because the meaning of the utterance depends on the context of the interaction. The findings indicate that deixis plays an important role in supporting effective classroom communication and interaction in English learning activities.
