Abstract
Semakin tinggi tingkat social comparison, maka semakin rendah subjective well-being pada dewasa awal. Kata kunci: social comparison, subjective well-being, Instagram, dewasa awal. ABSTRACT The Relationship Between Social Comparison and Subjective Well Being in Early Adults Who Use Instagram By: Alda Fathia Royan Fajri The widespread use of Instagram during early adulthood often triggers social comparison behavior, in which individuals compare themselves with the achievements of others. Based on Social Comparison Theory, negative self-evaluations resulting from this process are presumed to threaten an individual's subjective well-being. This study aims to examine the relationship between social comparison and subjective well-being among early adults who use Instagram. This research employed a quantitative correlational method. The participants consisted of 276 individuals aged 18–28 years who were selected using a purposive sampling technique with the criterion of being active Instagram users. Data were collected using a subjective well-being scale developed based on Diener’s theory and a social comparison scale adapted from Festinger’s theory. Data analysis was conducted using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation technique with the assistance of JASP software. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between social comparison and subjective well being (r = -0.468; p < 0.001). The higher the level of social comparison, the lower the subjective well-being among early adults. The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.219) showed that social comparison contributed 21.9% to subjective well-being. In general, most participants were categorized at a moderate level for both variables. This study concludes that engaging in social comparison on social media may negatively affect the psychological well-being of early adults. Keywords: social comparison, subjective well-being, Instagram, early adulthood.
