Abstract

Sungai Way Balau tergolong keanekaragaman sedang, meskipun komunitas planktonnya masih relatif stabil. This study aimed to assess water quality based on plankton communities, water transparency, nitrate, and phosphate and to analyze the relationships among these parameters. The study was conducted from April to May 2026 using a descriptive quantitative approach. Water and plankton samples were collected from four stations through purposive sampling. Plankton parameters included abundance, diversity, evenness, and dominance. The relationships between water quality parameters and plankton communities were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation. The results identified 13 plankton genera, with Oscillatoria as the dominant genus, totaling 118 individuals. Plankton abundance ranged from 35,400 to 46,800 individuals/L, the diversity index ranged from 1.190 to 1.564, the evenness index ranged from 0.664 to 0.859, and the dominance index ranged from 0.259 to 0.422. Nitrate concentrations of 16.83–20.41 mg/L exceeded the quality standard at all stations, while phosphate at station 3 reached 0.21 mg/L and also exceeded the standard. Spearman’s correlation showed no significant relationship between physicochemical parameters and plankton community structure. The Way Balau River was categorized as moderately polluted, although its plankton community remained relatively stable.
