Abstract

ABSTRACT Pamali (traditional taboos) are a product of Sundanese culture, encompassing advice and customs, including ethics, courtesy, respect for elders, and ways of interacting with family and others. This research aims to explore the forms of pamali that are still alive and passed down within the community, whether social, environmental, or spiritual. It also aims to unravel the structures of meaning that have long been considered fixed, in order to discover the rational, ecological, and ethical values hidden behind these pamali. This research employs Derrida's deconstruction theory and employs qualitative field research. The research location was Kedaung Village, Sragi District, South Lampung Regency. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation involving village elders, religious leaders, youth, and the Sundanese community in Kedaung Village. This research reveals how modernity, through urbanization, formal education, and the media, reproduces a hierarchy of knowledge that marginalizes pamali as superstition. The findings show that taboos are not merely traditional prohibitions, but rather adaptive epistemic systems that maintain ecological and social harmony in the daily lives of Sundanese people in Kedaung village. The deconstruction of taboos reveals how local knowledge is challenged by modernity. Through Derrida's Deconstruction theory, taboos are seen as fragile cultural texts, where the hegemony of modernity such as formal education, social media, increasingly sophisticated internet and urbanization erodes their authority. This study strengthens the study of cultural anthropology and sociology regarding the existence of oral traditions as local knowledge systems. By using a deconstruction approach, this study shows that taboos can be understood as "cultural texts" that have layered meanings, are not singular, and are open to new interpretations. This contributes to the development of deconstruction theory in the context of local culture, particularly in understanding the relationship between tradition and modernity. Keywords: Deconstruction, Sundanese Taboos, Hegemony of Modernity, Local Knowledge, Kedaung Village.
