Abstract

ABSTRACT The phenomenon of bystander bullying in schools indicates that many students who witness bullying incidents tend to remain passive. Low levels of empathy are one of the factors contributing to students’ inappropriate responses toward victims. Empathy, defined as the ability to understand and share the emotional experiences of others, as proposed by Mark H. Davis, consists of Perspective Taking, Empathic Concern, Fantasy, and Personal Distress. Therefore, group counseling using the role playing technique is considered an appropriate intervention to enhance empathy among bystander students. This study employed a quantitative approach using a preexperimental one group pretest-posttest design. The participants consisted of 21 students. The instrument used was an empathy questionnaire based on the multidimensional empathy theory. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test because the data were not normally distributed. The group counseling sessions using the role playing technique were conducted in five meetings, including group formation, material presentation, role playing stages I and II, reflection, and evaluation. The results showed that students’ empathy levels before the intervention were in the low to moderate category. After the implementation of the service, all participants experienced an increase in empathy scores. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, meaning that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that group counseling with the role playing technique is effective in improving empathy among bystander bullying students.
