Abstract

ABSTRACT The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based language learning applications, such as ELSA Speak, has become increasingly important in supporting EFL students’ English-speaking development. However, many university students still experience difficulties in speaking English due to limited practice opportunities, low confidence, fear of making mistakes, and limited exposure to authentic English-speaking environments. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate EFL university students’ perceptions of the use of the ELSA Speak application in improving their English-speaking skills and to identify the challenges they experienced while using it. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach. Eight eighth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Intan Lampung were selected through purposive sampling after completing a screening questionnaire. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals and analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s interactive model. The findings revealed that students generally recognized the benefits of using ELSA Speak across the sensory, cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of perception. Students appreciated the application’s visual display, audio feedback, pronunciation assessment, and pronunciation models. They also perceived improvements in pronunciation accuracy, speaking fluency, pronunciation awareness, confidence, motivation, and autonomous speaking practice. The study also identified several challenges, including limited premium features, unstable internet connections, repetitive learning activities, and difficulties in understanding certain pronunciation feedback. Despite these challenges, students considered ELSA Speak a valuable supplementary learning tool for supporting their English-speaking development.
