Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading comprehension was one of the essential skills in English language learning that students needed to master. However, preliminary observations and pre-research findings at SMPN 1 Banjit indicated that many eighth-grade students still experienced difficulties in identifying main ideas, making inferences, understanding vocabulary in context, and summarizing texts. In addition, reading instruction was still predominantly conducted through conventional methods with limited use of engaging digital learning media. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the Digital Storybook-Based Read-Aloud Technique had a significant effect on the reading comprehension ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Banjit in the 2025/2026 academic year. This study employed a quantitative method using a quasiexperimental design, specifically a pre-test and post-test control group design. The population consisted of 120 eighth-grade students from four classes. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling, resulting in two classes: one experimental class and one control class, each comprising 30 students. The research instrument was a multiple-choice reading comprehension test administered as a pre-test and a post-test. The experimental class received treatment through the Digital Storybook-Based Read-Aloud Technique, while the control class was taught using a conventional read-aloud technique. The findings indicated that the Digital Storybook-Based ReadAloud Technique had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension ability. The result of the independent samples t-test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. The average post-test score of the experimental class was 75.67, which was higher than that of the control class at 62.83. Furthermore, the effect size calculated using Cohen’s d was 1.63, which was categorized as a large effect. These results demonstrated that students who were taught through the Digital Storybook-Based Read-Aloud Technique achieved better reading comprehension than those who were taught through the conventional technique. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the Digital Storybook-Based Read-Aloud Technique was effective in improving the reading comprehension ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Banjit in the 2025/2026 academic year.
