Abstract

ABSTRACT English vocabulary size plays an important role in helping EFL learners understand information explicitly stated in reading texts. However, many EFL learners still possess limited English vocabulary sizes, making it difficult for them to achieve satisfactory literal reading comprehension in various academic texts. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate whether there was a significant correlation between English vocabulary size and literal reading comprehension among second-semester EFL students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Intan Lampung in the academic year of 2025/2026. This research employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 35 second-semester students selected through cluster random sampling from Classes 2D and 2H. The data were collected using an adapted Vocabulary Size Test (VST) and a Literal Reading Comprehension Test. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 31. Since the data were not normally distributed, the Spearman Rank Correlation test was used to examine the relationship between the two variables. The findings revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.836 with a significance value of p < 0.001. Since the significance value was lower than 0.05, the correlation was statistically significant. The correlation coefficient indicated a strong positive correlation between English vocabulary size and literal reading comprehension. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a statistically significant and strong positive correlation between English vocabulary size and literal reading comprehension among second-semester EFL students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Intan Lampung in the academic year of 2025/2026.
