Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed to investigate the implementation of reinforcement skills in English classes at SMP Global Madani Bandar Lampung, identify the problems experienced by teachers when applying reinforcement skills, and explore the problems faced by students during the learning process. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with English teachers, and questionnaires distributed to students. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the English teachers implemented various reinforcement skills, including verbal reinforcement, reinforcement through facial expressions and body movements, reinforcement by approaching students, touch reinforcement, fun activities, and symbolic reinforcement. Teacher A applied reinforcement more frequently and variedly than Teacher B. As a result, students in Class A demonstrated higher motivation (63.5%) compared to students in Class B (49.3%). The study also found several challenges faced by teachers, such as maintaining consistency in providing reinforcement, managing student engagement, balancing praise and correction, and dealing with time limitations. Meanwhile, students experienced several problems related to reinforcement, including unequal distribution of reinforcement, differences in responsiveness to reinforcement, and dependency on reinforcement for motivation. Despite these challenges, reinforcement skills positively influenced students‟ motivation, participation, confidence, and focus during English learning activities. In conclusion, the implementation of reinforcement skills plays an important role in creating a positive learning environment and improving student motivation in English classes. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to apply reinforcement strategies consistently, fairly, and appropriately to maximize student engagement and learning outcomes.
