Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to philosophically analyze Murtadha Muthahhari’s thoughts on women, particularly in the aspects of ontology, epistemology, and their implications for the concepts of rights, justice, and the differences in roles between men and women. The discussion focuses on understanding how the essence of women is explained within the framework of Islamic thought and how the concepts of rights and justice are philosophically formulated in Muthahhari’s perspective. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data collection techniques were conducted through documentation and literature study of both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources in this study include Murtadha Muthahhari’s works, especially Women’s Rights in Islam and Divine Justice, while secondary sources were obtained from books, journals, and other relevant literature related to the research topic. Data analysis was carried out using a philosophical approach through ontological and epistemological studies to identify the structure of thought underlying the concepts of women, rights, justice, and role differences in Islam. The findings show that, ontologically, women are understood as human beings who possess equality with men in moral, spiritual, and existential dimensions. Differences between men and women are viewed as part of a complementary structure of life rooted in the concept of human nature (fitrah). In this perspective, differences in rights and roles are not regarded as forms of injustice, but rather as part of proportional justice that places rights and obligations according to the conditions, capacities, and functions of each individual. From an epistemological perspective, Muthahhari’s thought is constructed through the integration of revelation, reason, and social reality. This approach produces an understanding that is not merely textual but also contextual in interpreting the concepts of rights and justice. Muthahhari’s thought also demonstrates a strong philosophical foundation in understanding women in Islam, while simultaneously opening space for a more contextual interpretation of the relationship between men and women in modern society.
