Abstract
ABSTRACT This research aimed to investigate whether there was a significant correlation between students’ habit of listening to English songs and their action verb vocabulary mastery. The researcher focused on identifying the relationship between students’ listening habits toward English songs and their understanding of action verb vocabulary among seventh-grade students at MTs Darul Huda Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2025/2026. This research employed a quantitative method with a correlational research design. The population of this research consisted of 107 seventh-grade students of MTs Darul Huda Bandar Lampung. The sample of the research was 52 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used in collecting the data were a questionnaire and a vocabulary test. The questionnaire was used to measure students’ habit of listening to English songs, while the vocabulary test was used to measure students’ action verb vocabulary mastery. The data were analyzed by using Spearman Rank Correlation through SPSS 26 because one of the variables was not normally distributed. Before testing the hypothesis, the researcher conducted normality and linearity tests. The result of the research showed that there was a significant positive correlation between students’ habit of listening to English songs and their action verb vocabulary mastery. It was proven by the result of Spearman Rank Correlation in which the correlation coefficient was 0.354 and the significance value was 0.010 which was lower than 0.05. The correlation coefficient indicated a low positive correlation between the two variables. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It can be concluded that students who had better habits of listening to English songs tended to have better action verb vocabulary mastery
