Abstract

ABSTRACT Vocabulary is one of the essential components in mastering English, as it supports students’ ability to communicate effectively in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. However, many students still face difficulties in learning vocabulary through conventional methods that are less engaging. Therefore, the use of English movies, especially science fiction and fantasy genres, is considered as an alternative medium that provides contextual, visual, and authentic language exposure. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of second-semester English Education students toward vocabulary learning through English science fiction and fantasy movies. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were 20 second-semester students of the English Education Department. The data were collected through semistructured interviews and observation, supported by documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study focused on three aspects of perception, namely cognitive, affective, and conative aspects. The findings revealed that students generally had positive perceptions of using English science fiction and fantasy movies for vocabulary learning. From the cognitive aspect, students were able to understand and acquire new vocabulary through contextual and visual support. From the affective aspect, students showed increased interest, motivation, and enjoyment in learning vocabulary. From the conative aspect, students demonstrated a tendency to apply new vocabulary in daily communication and imitate pronunciation from the movies. Although some challenges were found, such as unfamiliar vocabulary and fast-paced dialogues, English movies were considered an effective and engaging medium for improving students’ vocabulary masteryent.
