Abstract
ABSTRACT English language learning involves the development of four essential language skills, one of which is writing. However, many students encounter difficulties in developing writing skills due to limited vocabulary mastery and inadequate spelling competence. This issue was identified among the eighth-grade students of SMPN 36 Bandar Lampung in academic year of 2025/2026, where many students experienced difficulties in organizing letters correctly to form words, resulting in spelling errors and limited vocabulary use in their writing. Consequently, a considerable number of students failed to achieve the target score (KKM) in writing. Furthermore, teachers faced challenges in identifying effective instructional strategies and selecting appropriate learning media to support students writing development. Spelling is a fundamental component of writing because it enables students to construct words accurately and communicate their ideas effectively. Therefore, the Level 2 Spelling Bee Game was implemented as a learning media to facilitate students writing development. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Level 2 Spelling Bee Game towards the writing skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 36 Bandar Lampung in academic year of 2025/2026. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design involving an experimental group and a control group. The treatment was conducted over three instructional sessions, each lasting 70 minutes. The population consisted of 283 eighth-grade students distributed across nine classes at SMP N 36 Bandar Lampung. Using random sampling, class VIII-B was selected as the experimental group and class VIII-F as the control group, with 30 students in each group, resulting in a total sample of 60 students. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests in the form of narrative writing tasks and were analyzed using an independent samples t-test. The findings revealed that the mean post-test score of the experimental group was 75.83, whereas that of the control group was 55.87. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference between the two groups. The SPSS output showed a significance value of 0.00032, which was lower than the predetermined significance level of 0.05 (α < 0.05). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating that the implementation of the Level 2 Spelling Bee Game had a statistically significant effect on students writing skills. These findings suggest that the Level 2 Spelling Bee Game isiii an effective learning media for improving the writing skills of eighthgrade students at SMP N 36 Bandar Lampung in academic year of 2025/2026.
