Abstract

ABSTRACT English pronunciation is very important for students because it helps them communicate clearly, avoid misunderstanding, and speak more confidently. Good pronunciation also supports effective interaction in academic and social contexts. However, many students still experience difficulties in pronouncing English words, as their first language plays a significant role in shaping their pronunciation. This study aimed to identify English consonant pronunciation errors made by Javanese students and to analyze how Javanese phonology affects their pronunciation performance. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The participants were 20 Javanese students. The data were collected through pronunciation tests and interviews, and the students’ speech was recorded and carefully analyzed. The findings showed that the most problematic consonants were /θ/, /ð/, /dʒ/, and /v/. Students often replaced these sounds with similar consonants from Javanese, such as /t/, /d/, or /f/. These substitutions indicated that Javanese phonology has a strong bearing on students’ English pronunciation, especially at the consonant level. The transfer also appeared in suprasegmental features, such as intonation and rhythm, where students tended to use flat stress patterns and equal syllable timing when speaking English. In addition, psychological factors such as lack of confidence, anxiety, and limited practice contributed to pronunciation errors. In conclusion, Javanese phonology significantly determined student pronunciation performance. Therefore, teachers should provide focused pronunciation practice and encourage students to improve their speaking skills.
