Abstract

ABSTRACT Paraphrasing plays an important role in academic writing because it helps students express ideas in their own words and avoid plagiarism. It also contributes to improve the clarity and quality of students’ writing. However, many students still face difficulties in applying paraphrasing techniques due to limited vocabulary, lack of understanding, and challenges in maintaining the original meaning. Therefore, this research aims to investigate students’ perceptions of using paraphrasing techniques in academic writing. This research used a quantitative method, employing a nonexperimental survey research design, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis. The data were collected through a questionnaire using a Likert scale distributed to 153 sixth semester students of the English Education Study Program at State Islamic University of Raden Intan Lampung. The sample consisted of students who had previously taken the Critical Academic Writing course and had learned paraphrasing techniques. The data were analysed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel to identify patterns in students’ perceptions. The results show that students have generally positive perceptions toward paraphrasing techniques. The mean scores of the three aspects are 3.88 for students’ perceptions toward paraphrasing techniques, 3.91 for advantages of paraphrasing techniques, and 3.77 for challenges in using paraphrasing techniques. These findings indicate that students understand the benefits of paraphrasing, although they still face several challenges in applying it. Therefore, paraphrasing techniques play an important role in supporting students’ academic writing development.
