Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the use of cohesive devices in a political speech delivered by Joe Biden on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The study aims to identify the types of cohesive devices, determine the most dominant type, and explain how grammatical and lexical cohesion are used to construct a coherent and meaningful discourse. This research is based on the cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of the official transcript of the speech obtained from a reliable source. The data were analyzed using an interactive model of data analysis, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that four types of grammatical cohesion are used in the speech: reference, conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis, along with lexical cohesion such as reiteration and collocation. Reference is identified as the most dominant type. The analysis shows that grammatical cohesion, particularly reference, is used to maintain continuity of ideas and to connect participants across the discourse, while conjunctions function to organize arguments logically. In terms of lexical cohesion, repetition is frequently used to emphasize key messages and reinforce important ideas. These patterns indicate that cohesive devices are not only used to link sentences but also to enhance clarity, coherence, and the persuasive impact of the speech.
