Abstract

ABSTRACT By: Annisa Novitriani Figurative language constitutes a central stylistic device in song lyrics, enabling the construction of layered meanings and the articulation of complex emotional and symbolic expressions. The songs of Lady Gaga exemplify a distinctive use of figurative forms that reflect both personal and socio-cultural narratives. This study aims to systematically identify the types of figurative language employed in Lady Gaga ’ s songs and to critically examine their contextual meanings within the lyrical discourse. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative design. The data were derived from selected song lyrics and collected through documentation techniques. The researcher functioned as the primary instrument, supported by systematic coding procedures. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The classification and interpretation of figurative language were grounded in the framework developed by Knickerbocker and Renninger. The findings reveal a diverse range of figurative expressions, including simile (3 instances), metaphor (5 instances), personification (3 instances), hyperbole (4 instances), allusion (1 instance), and symbol (4 instances), with metaphor emerging as the most dominant form. These patterns suggest that figurative language functions not merely as aesthetic ornamentation but as a strategic linguistic resource for encoding implicit meanings and intensifying emotional resonance. This study contributes to the field of stylistics by offering a nuanced understanding of how figurative devices operate within contemporary popular music and provides a theoretical basis for further discourseoriented literary analysis.
