Abstract

ABSTRACT This research investigates eighth-grade students’ perceptions of the use of animated videos in learning listening at SMP Negeri 23 Bandar Lampung. The research is motivated by the importance of listening as a fundamental skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning and the challenges students face in listening comprehension due to limited engaging media and traditional teaching methods. Employing a quantitative non-experimental survey design, the study involved 80 students selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a paper-based Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 35 items covering cognitive, affective, behavioral, engagement, and media effectiveness aspects. Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS to determine the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and perception categories. The results show that students generally have a positive perception of animation or animated video in listening activities. Most respondents agree that animation video helped them understand listening materials, improved vocabulary comprehension, increased motivation, and enhanced engagement during lessons. The categorization of perception scores indicates that the majority of students fall into the high perception level, while a smaller proportion are categorized as having a moderate perception. Although some students experienced challenges such as difficulty focusing or understanding certain language elements, animated videos were overall perceived as an effective and appropriate learning medium. This study concludes that animated videos can support listening comprehension and student engagement, and it highlights the importance of selecting suitable video content to meet learners’ needs in EFL classrooms.
