Abstract
ABSTRACT This research examined gender stereotypes reflected in the main character of the movie On the Basis of Sex. The study applied sociolinguistic theory to analyze the relationship between language, culture, and gender, with Lips’ theory of gender stereotypes as the grand theoretical framework. According to Lips, gender stereotypes consist of four components: personal traits, occupational roles, behavior, and physical appearance. This study employed a qualitative content analysis method. The data sources were the movie On the Basis of Sex and its script. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive model, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Investigator triangulation was used to ensure credibility. The researcher found that 38 data points contained components of gender stereotypes of all types. The analysis of personal traits in the film On the Basis of Sex found the ways in which gender stereotypes are reinforced through the portrayal of characters, such as the portrayal of the Harvard man, and the stereotype that women are overly emotional. The analysis of occupation and social roles in On the Basis of Sex reveals how deeply rooted gender stereotypes shape professional opportunities and societal expectations. In the film, the portrayal of Ruth Ginsburg and other female characters challenges the traditional notion that certain professions, particularly law, are inherently male domains. The analysis of behaviors in On the Basis of Sex highlights how societal gender stereotypes continue to shape expectations for both men and women, especially in the professional and familial spheres. And the last, the analysis of appearance (physical characteristics) in On the Basis of Sex reveals how gender stereotypes persist in shaping societal expectations regarding how men and women should present themselves. The findings indicate that the movie both reinforces and challenges certain gender stereotypes. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is portrayed as a woman who resists societal expectations and redefines women’s roles in education and the legal profession. This study contributes toiii the discussion of gender representation in film and highlights the portrayal of women in professional and academic contexts.
