Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of soap formulations containing ethanol extracts of betel leaves (Piper betle L.) and ginger rhizomes (Zingiber officinale) against C. albicans ATCC-14053 as an alternative to conventional therapy. The research was conducted experimentally using the well diffusion method on 24 samples divided into six groups, consisting of four extract concentration variations (5%:5%, 2.5%:7.5%, 7.5%:2.5%, and 10%:10%), a positive control (ketoconazole), and a negative control (soap base). Physical evaluations included pH, foam height, homogeneity, and irritation tests, all of which met the required standards. The results showed that the 10%:10% concentration produced the largest inhibition zone (13.7 mm; strong category), while the 2.5%:7.5% concentration produced the smallest inhibition zone (7.6 mm; moderate category). Data analysis using One-Way ANOVA obtained a p-value < 0.05, indicating significant differences among the treatment groups. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that soap formulations containing ethanol extracts of betel leaves and ginger rhizomes exhibit significant antifungal activity against C. albicans and have potential to be developed as an alternative treatment for fungal infections. Keywords: Piper betle L., Zingiber officinale, antifungal, well diffusion, Candida albicans ATCC-14053.
