Abstract

ABSTRACT Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component in learning English, especially for elementary school students who are still developing basic language skills. However, many students experience difficulties in understanding and memorizing English vocabulary due to monotonous teaching methods and limited learning media. This research aimed to investigate the influence of using a visual dictionary on students’ vocabulary mastery of the fourth grade at SDN 1 Tanjung Agung Bandar Lampung. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasiexperimental research design with a pre-test and post-test control group. The population consisted of all fourth-grade students, with two classes selected as the experimental and control groups. The experimental class was taught vocabulary using a visual dictionary, while the control class was taught using conventional teaching methods. The research instrument was a vocabulary test focusing on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The data were analyzed using N-Gain analysis, normality test, homogeneity test, and independent sample ttest. The results showed that the students in the experimental class achieved higher improvement in vocabulary mastery compared to those in the control class. The independent sample t-test revealed that the significance value was lower than 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of a visual dictionary has a significant positive influence on students’ vocabulary mastery. Based on the findings, the visual dictionary is recommended as an effective teaching medium to enhance vocabulary learning, increase students’ motivation, and support a more engaging learning process in elementary schools.
