Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focused on the issue of students’ low Englishspeaking ability, which is commonly affected by limited vocabulary, low confidence, and the use of less interactive teaching methods. Speaking is a crucial language skill that allows learners to express ideas, thoughts, and opinions effectively in academic and social contexts. However, classroom instruction often provides limited opportunities for active oral practice. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate whether the Round Robin technique could significantly enhance students’ speaking skills compared to conventional teaching methods. The study applied a quasi-experimental design using a pretest– posttest control group. The participants were eleventh-grade students of MAN 1 Bandar Lampung, divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using the Round Robin technique, while the control group received instruction through traditional lecturing. Data were collected through speaking tests administered before and after the treatment. Students’ speaking performances were assessed based on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Since the data were not normally distributed, the Mann–Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis. The results revealed a significant difference in speaking achievement between the two groups. Students taught through the Round Robin technique showed greater improvement than those taught using conventional methods. These findings indicate that the Round Robin technique had a significant influence on students’ speaking ability. It can be concluded that this technique is an effective instructional technique for improving students’ oral communication skills and promoting active participation in English speaking classrooms.
