Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the correlation between self-esteem and speaking fluency among senior high school students. Self-esteem is defined as an individual's overall evaluation of their worth, encompassing feelings of value, capability, and self-confidence, significantly influencing behavior and communication. Speaking fluency refers to the ability to speak smoothly, clearly, and continuously in English, minimizing pauses and maintaining natural speech flow. Utilizing a quantitative research approach with a correlational design, the study involved tenth-grade students at a selected senior high school in Lampung. Data were collected through self-esteem questionnaires (adapted from Coopersmith, 1967) and speaking fluency tests (using a monologue format with a rubric adapted from Brown, 2004, and Goh & Burns, 2012). The instruments underwent rigorous validity and reliability testing, with all 20 questionnaire items deemed valid (r-count > 0.325) and showing high reliability (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.843). Normality (Sig. > 0.05) and linearity (Sig. = 0.525 > 0.05) assumptions were met, validating the use of Pearson's correlation. The findings revealed a very strong and statistically significant positive correlation between students' self-esteem and their speaking fluency, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.991 (p < 0.001). This indicates that higher self-esteem levels are strongly associated with improved speaking fluency. In conclusion, this research unequivocally demonstrates a robust positive relationship between self-esteem and speaking fluency among the senior high school students studied. This highlights the critical role of self-esteem as a facilitating factor in developing English speaking fluency and underscores the importance of psychological factors in language learning.
