Abstract
ABSTRACT This research explores the forms of speaking anxiety and the factors contributing to its emergence among EFL students during oral examinations in the Speaking for Tourism course. Employing a descriptive qualitative case study design, the research involved 20 students who completed an open-ended questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews with eight purposively selected participants who demonstrated prominent anxiety symptoms. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings reveal that speaking anxiety manifested in interconnected physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions, including physiological tension, mental block, fear of making mistakes, hesitation, and reliance on memorization. Students’ anxiety was shaped by the interaction of linguistic limitations, psychological pressure, inadequate preparation, lecturer-related practices, peer influence, and examination conditions, all of which constrained students’ oral performance. Overall, the research underscores that speaking anxiety in oral examinations is a multidimensional and context-specific issue in EFL learning, highlighting the need for anxiety-sensitive assessment and instructional strategies to support students’ oral communication development.
