Abstract

Abstract: This study examined the association between student voice and English achievement among ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tanjungsari, South Lampung (Indonesia). Using a quantitative correlational design, student voice was measured with a Likert-type questionnaire; after item validation, nine items were retained to form the composite score, and English achievement was taken from teacher-recorded final scores. Assumptions for Pearson’s correlation (Shapiro–Wilk normality, linearity, outliers) were met for the N = 20 analyzable cases. The analysis indicated a small, non-significant association between student voice and English achievement, r(18) = .169, p = .476, 95% CI [−.30, .57], accounting for approximately 3% of the variance. Within this context, perceived student voice did not emerge as a direct predictor of English achievement. The result likely reflects limited statistical power and the influence of unmeasured factors (e.g., prior proficiency, instructional quality, motivation). We recommend larger, multi-class samples and multivariate models that include relevant covariates, alongside continued refinement and reporting of reliability for the nine-item student-voice scale. While pedagogically valuable, student-voice practices may contribute indirectly and should be combined with instructional supports to enhance attainment.
