Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the use of English slang in the movie Attack the Block (2011) from a sociolinguistic perspective, focusing on the types of slang and their frequency distribution. The analysis is based on Allan and Burridge’s slang typology and aims to reveal how slang reflects the identity of the urban community portrayed in the movie. This research employed Qualitative Content Analysis supported by descriptive statistics to classify slang expressions found in the movie dialogues. Two research questions were addressed: the types of slang used and their percentage distribution. The findings identified 86 slang words, showing that Fresh and Creative slang was the most dominant type (46.51%), while Imitative slang was the least frequent (12.79%). These results indicate that slang in the movie functions as a marker of group identity and social solidarity rather than merely a linguistic variation. Therefore, this study recommends that EFL teaching incorporate sociolinguistic aspects and authentic materials to help students understand real-world, non standard English use. Keywords: British Slang, Attack the Block, Qualitative Content Analysis, Slang Types, Frequency Distribution, Sociolinguistics.
