Abstract
ABSTRACT The Correlation Between Students’ Habits of Listening English Music and Their Speaking Ability : A Study On UIN Raden Intan Lampung Students. By ASTI AULIA ANANTA This study aimed to investigate the correlation between students' habits of listening to English music and their English speaking ability among fourth-semester students in the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung during the 2024/2025 academic year. The research was grounded in the assumption that frequent exposure to English through music could enhance key linguistic elements essential for speaking, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and intonation. While previous studies had explored music's impact on vocabulary and listening skills, there had been limited examination of its effects on speaking ability, particularly at the tertiary level. This gap underscored the need for empirical evidence to validate music as a supplementary tool in language learning. The research employed a quantitative correlational design. The population included all fourth-semester students, with a sample of 62 participants selected via cluster sampling from classes 4G, 4H, and 4I. Data collection utilized a questionnaire to assess listening habits and documentation of final scores from the "Speaking for Tourism" course to measure speaking ability. Analysis was conducted using SPSS 25, involving normality testing, linearity testing, and Pearson Product-Moment correlation to examine the relationship between variables. The findings indicated that the data were normally distributed and exhibited a linear relationship. The Pearson correlation analysis yielded a coefficient of r = 0.792 with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, revealing a strong and significant positive correlation. This suggested that students who frequently listened to English music tended to perform better in speaking. In conclusion, English music ii positively contributed to speaking skill development and could be integrated into language-learning strategies to improve fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and overall proficiency. Future research was recommended to employ experimental methods or explore additional linguistic variables. Keywords: Correlation, English Music, Listening, Speaking Ability, Students’ Habits
