Abstract

ABSTRACT Income inequality among ASEAN countries remains a significant issue in efforts to achieve equitable economic growth in the region. Countries such as Singapore and Brunei Darussalam have a much higher per capita income than Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia. This raises the question of whether low-income countries will be able to catch up with rich countries during the period 2013-2023. In addition, the labor force participation rate (LFPR) and foreign direct investment (FDI) are thought to influence the process of economic convergence in the region. This study aims to analyze sigma and beta convergence in ASEAN from 2013-2023 using quantitative methods with a panel data approach. Secondary data were obtained from ten ASEAN countries, sourced from the World Bank, ASEAN Statistical Yearbook, and ILO. The analysis was conducted using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM), with GDP per capita as an indicator of economic growth, and TPAK and FDI as explanatory variables in the convergence model. The results of the study show that the ASEAN region has experienced sigma convergence, marked by a decline in GDP per capita inequality between countries. Absolute beta convergence occurs at a rate of 3.89% per year, which requires approximately 17.8 years to reduce the economic growth gap by half. Conditional beta convergence occurs at a rate of 3.68% per year, or approximately 18.8 years to achieve equilibrium after including TPAK and FDI. The test results show that TPAK has no significant effect, while FDI has a positive but insignificant effect on economic growth. In terms of Islamic economics, these findings are in line with the principles of justice ('adl) and equitable distribution of welfare across all ASEAN countries.
