Abstract

ABSTRACT The rapid rise of social media has transformed it from a source of entertainment into a potential educational tool that offers new opportunities for language learning. Among these platforms, TikTok has become especially popular among students and provides a distinctive medium for developing English-speaking skills. This study aims to explore eighth-grade students’ perceptions of using TikTok videos to enhance their English-speaking abilities, focusing on both cognitive and affective aspects. Understanding these perceptions is essential to assess whether TikTok can serve as an engaging and relevant supplementary learning tool. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design that involved questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with eighth grade students of MTs Al Hikmah Bandar Lampung, supported by documentation as additional data. The investigation focused on two dimensions: cognitive, which includes vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, intonation, and fluency, and affective, which covers confidence, motivation, and enthusiasm. The findings revealed that students generally held positive perceptions toward using TikTok to improve their speaking skills. They reported better vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency, as well as greater confidence and motivation through interactive features such as duets and comments. Although some challenges existed, including distractions and inaccurate pronunciation, TikTok showed strong potential as an enjoyable and effective medium for supporting English-speaking development.
