Abstract

ABSTRACT Critical Discourse Analysis studies how language is used and how its characteristics relate to broader social, cultural, political, and ideological contexts. The Jakarta Post is one of the mass media outlets that uses English and has been operating in Indonesia for a long time, serving as a source of information for readers who need news in English. This study aims to analyze the discourse in a news article entitled “Strengthening English Language Education: Investing in Teachers for a Global Future” using Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis theory. This study uses a qualitative method, in which the researcher is the main instrument. The research data consists of news articles that are examined through Van Dijk's three dimensions of analysis, namely text structure, social cognition, and social context, to understand how meaning is constructed in the text. The results of this study are the discovery of elements in the text structure, such as macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure that emphasize the importance of improving teacher competency as the core of strengthening English language education. This article also reflects the author's social cognition that sees teacher professional development as a shared responsibility in facing global demands, as well as highlighting the social context involving cooperation between the government and international partners such as the British Council. Overall, the language used aims to build an understanding that investment in teacher quality and ongoing collaboration is key to the success of national education policies.
