Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the understanding of the Girimulyo Village community regarding the prohibition of gotong dalan marriage, a Javanese tradition that prohibits marriage between couples whose houses are on opposite sides of the same road, facing each other directly without any intersection separating the two so that the position of the houses is like "in front of each other's door", potentially causing disasters and even death. The purpose of this study is to examine how this prohibition is understood and practiced by various generations, and to assess its relevance from the perspective of Islamic law, particularly through the concept of sadd'udzari'ah (closing the path to harm) with a critical approach that highlights its inconsistency with sharia. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and literature studies. The results of the study indicate that the gotong dalan tradition does not violate the pillars or requirements of Islamic marriage (such as ijab-qabul, the presence of a guardian, and valid witnesses), so that according to sharia, such marriages are still permitted without religious law obstacles. However, the implementation of this customary prohibition has the potential to cause harm such as limiting the rights of couples, giving rise to family conflicts, and weakening the belief in monotheism due to superstition, so this tradition of gotong dalan must be abandoned.
