Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh adanya perbedaan pemahaman teologis mengenai makna dan otoritas penafsiran simbol salib dalam tradisi Katolik dan Protestan. Salib, sebagai ikon utama iman Kristen, tidak hanya dipahami sebagai tanda penderitaan dan penebusan, tetapi juga sebagai fondasi teologi keselamatan yang membentuk identitas dan praktik religius umat. Perbedaan penekanan antara salib bercorpus dalam Katolik yang menonjolkan pengorbanan Kristus, dan salib polos dalam Protestan yang menekankan kemenangan dan kebangkitan, menjadi alasan perlunya kajian komparatif yang lebih dalam agar makna teologis simbol ini dipahami secara menyeluruh. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif-deskriptif dengan pendekatan studi pustaka dan wawancara mendalam kepada informan dari kedua agama. Data diperoleh melalui literatur teologis, dokumen gereja, kitab ajaran, serta observasi religius. Analisis dilakukan melalui reduksi, kategorisasi, dan perbandingan data untuk menemukan pola pemikiran, titik temu, serta perbedaan konseptual terkait makna salib dalam Katolik dan Protestan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Gereja Katolik memaknai salib sebagai simbol sakramental yang menghadirkan pengorbanan Kristus secara liturgis dan historis, sedangkan Protestan menempatkan salib dalam otoritas firman dan pengalaman iman personal, dengan penekanan pada keselamatan oleh anugerah. Dalam kehidupan beragama, salib berperan sebagai penggerak spiritualitas, etika, dan kesaksian hidup, menjadi sumber refleksi iman sekaligus identitas religius umat. Perbedaan pemaknaan tersebut tidak meniadakan inti iman yang sama, yaitu pengakuan terhadap karya keselamatan Kristus bagi manusia. Kata Kunci : Salib, Katholik, Protestan, Teologi Simbol, Perilaku Beragama ii ABSTRACT This study is motivated by the theological differences in understanding the meaning and interpretive authority of the cross symbol within Catholic and Protestant traditions. The cross, as the central icon of Christian faith, is not only viewed as a sign of suffering and redemption, but also as the foundation of soteriological theology that shapes religious identity and practice. The difference between the Catholic crucifix, which emphasizes the sacrificial suffering of Christ, and the plain Protestant cross, which highlights victory and resurrection, encourages the need for a comparative study to gain a more comprehensive understanding of its theological meaning. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive method through literature study and in-depth interviews with informants from both traditions. Data were obtained from theological literature, church documents, doctrinal texts, and religious observation. The data analysis was carried out through reduction, categorization, and comparative interpretation to identify thought patterns, points of convergence, and conceptual differences regarding the meaning of the cross in Catholicism and Protestantism. The results show that the Catholic Church interprets the cross as a sacramental symbol that presents Christ’s sacrifice historically and liturgically, while Protestantism places the cross within the authority of Scripture and personal faith experience, emphasizing salvation through grace. In religious life, the cross functions as a source of spirituality, ethics, and Christian testimony, shaping moral awareness and strengthening religious identity. These differences do not eliminate the shared core belief, namely the acknowledgment of Christ’s work of salvation for humanity.
