Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the factors contributing to speaking anxiety among eighth-semester students during their thesis proposal seminars, as well as the coping strategies that can be used to coping speaking anxiety during presenting thesis proposal seminars in the English Education Study Program at the State Islamic University Raden Intan Lampung. This study uses qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach. The participants in this study are EFL students of the English Education Study Program who obtained grades of A, B+, and B in public speaking courses and took the thesis proposal seminar presentation, with a total of 3 informants selected through purposive sampling. In collecting data, the researcher used observation and interviews. The findings reveal that eighth-semester students with varying grades in Public Speaking at the English Education Study Program of the State Islamic University Raden Intan Lampung experience several factors contributing to speaking anxiety. These factors include Communication Apprehension, which involves internal factors such as fear of failure, speech anxiety, and negative experiences. Test Anxiety involves external factors, such as the conditions of presentation, failing to practice, and physical factors, as well as anxiety about Fear of Negative Evaluation, which also includes other internal factors, such as conflicting emotions, fear of losing thread of the material, fear of being stopped, and negative thinking. Therefore, the researcher also identified several strategies used by students to cope with speaking anxiety during their thesis proposal seminar presentations. These strategies include preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and labeled acceptance.
