Abstract

ABSTRACT THE INFLUENCE OF RIDER (READ, IMAGINE, DESCRIBE, EVALUATE, REPEAT) STRATEGY TOWARDS STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION IN NARRATIVE TEXT AT MTs BANII SAALIM IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 By Vika Novitasari Reading is one of the essential language skills that must be mastered by students. Through reading, students can obtain information and improve their vocabulary and comprehension. However, the students’ reading comprehension at MTs Banii Saalim was still low, as shown in the preliminary data, where only 35.6% of students achieved a complete score. To solve the problem, the researcher applied RIDER strategy. The objective of this research is to know whether there is an influence of using RIDER (Read, Imagine, Describe, Evaluate, Repeat) strategy towards students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at MTs Banii Saalim in the academic year 2024/2025. This research used quasi-experimental design with a population of the eighth-grade students of MTs Banii Saalim in the academic year 2024/2025. The sample consisted of two classes: experimental and control class. The experimental class was taught using the RIDER strategy, while the control class was taught using reading aloud strategy. The treatment was conducted in three meetings. In collecting data, the researcher used instrument in the form of multiple-choice questions which had been tried out prior to the treatments. The instrument was given in pre-test and post-test. Before giving the treatment, the researcher gave pre-test for both classes. Then, after conducting the treatments, the instrument was given in posttest. After giving pre-test and post-test, the researcher analyzed the data using SPSS (Statistical Package for The Social Sciences) to compute independent sample t-test. The result of data analysis showed that Sig. = 0.000 and ɑ = 0.05. It means Ha is accepted because Sig. < ɑ = 0.000 < 0.05. It can be concluded that there is an influence of using RIDER strategy towards students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. The strategy helped students to become more engaged, visualize the content, and evaluate their understanding effectively, leading to better comprehension outcomes at the eighth grade of MTs Banii Saalim in the academic year 2024/2025. Keywords: reading comprehension, narrative text, RIDER strategy.
