Abstract

ABSTRACT Spotify is one of the music streaming services that has rapidly developed in Indonesia, marked by a steady increase in the number of users each year. However, this growth has not been followed by a proportional increase in conversions to the Premium service, even though most of Spotify’s revenue comes from paid subscribers. Advertising in the freemium model, which is expected to encourage user transition, often proves ineffective, as most users prefer to remain on the free service. This condition indicates a gap between theory and practice, making it important to examine the factors that influence subscription intention, particularly among Spotify users in Bandar Lampung. This study aims to examine the effect of advertising exposure and the perceived value of premium subscription on the intention to subscribe to Spotify Premium, both partially and simultaneously, as well as to review such intention from the perspective of Islamic economics. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving 100 Spotify users aged ≥18 years in Bandar Lampung, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via online questionnaires and analyzed using inferential statistical tests. The results show that advertising exposure has a positive and significant effect on subscription intention, although the effect is relatively weak. In contrast, perceived value has a positive, significant, and dominant influence. Simultaneously, both variables significantly affect and explain 49.7% of the variation in the intention to subscribe to Spotify Premium. Thus, subscription intention is more strongly determined by users’ perception of the value of premium services than by advertising intensity alone. From the perspective of Islamic economics, subscription intention is understood as niyyah to enter into a valid ijārah contract, based on mutual consent (tarāḍī) and clear benefits (’ujrah), thereby aligning with contemporary muamalah principles.
