Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to investigate the influence of using Spinning Wheel media on studens‟ writing skills in descriptive text at tenth grade of SMAN 1 Labuhan Ratu. Writing is one of the essential skills in English language learning; however, many students struggle with organizing ideas, selecting appropriate vocabulary, and applying correct grammar, especially in writing descriptive texts. At SMAN 1 Labuhan Ratu, a significant number of tenth-grade students scored below the minimum passing grade in writing assessments, indicating their difficulties in this area. Traditional teaching methods often fail to fully engage students, leading to low motivation and performance in writing tasks. Therefore, the researcher introduced Spinning Wheel media as an interactive learning tool aimed at increasing student engagement, encouraging creativity, and improving writing skills through more dynamic classroom activities. This research applied a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental class taught using Spinning Wheel media and a control class taught using conventional methods. The participants were 71 tenth-grade students from SMAN 1 Labuhan Ratu in the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were gathered through pre-tests and post-tests focused on writing descriptive texts, and assessed using criteria from Tribble (1996), covering content, organization, vocabulary, language, and mechanics. Statistical analyses, including normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis testing (independent t-test), were conducted using SPSS to determine the effectiveness of the media. The findings revealed that the post-test scores of the experimental class (mean = 74.60) were significantly higher than those of the control class (mean = 68.67), with a significance value of 0.006 (p < 0.05). These results confirm that the use of Spinning Wheel media has a statistically significant influence on students‟ descriptive writing skills. In conclusion, integrating Spinning Wheel media into writing instruction is an effective strategy to enhance students' writing performance and motivation, making the learning process more enjoyable and impactful. ii Keywords: Descriptive text, spinning wheel media, student engagement, writing skill, quasi-experimental design.
