Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading habit is considered one of the important factors that can influence students’ writing performance. Students who engage in frequent reading are more likely to enrich their vocabulary, improve text organization, and develop better language use in writing. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between students’ reading habits and their ability in writing explanation texts at SMAIT Insan Mulia Boarding School in the second semester of the academic year 2024/2025. The research employed a quantitative correlational design with 49 students selected as the sample. The data were collected through a validated reading habit questionnaire and a writing test, then analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation in SPSS 25.0. The findings revealed that the correlation coefficient (r) was 0.323 with a significance value of 0.023, which is lower than 0.05. This result indicates that the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted. It can be concluded that there is a statistically significant but low correlation between students’ reading habits and their ability to write explanation texts. This finding implies that fostering good reading habits among students may contribute positively to the improvement of their writing performance, particularly in academic text production.
