Abstract

ABSTRACT Simple past tense was one of the tenses that students find challenging to understand. A common issue was the difficulty in differentiating between the varying forms of regular and irregular verbs, as well as the verb 'to be', which confused students. Furthermore, teaching methods still required students to memorize formulas presented another problem that struggled students to construct simple past tense sentences. Another issue identified in the field, based on conducted research, was the low interest of students in the simple past tense material. Therefore, it was essential to develop methods, techniques, or media that could enhance students' understanding of the simple past tense material and make them enjoy learning it. Therefore, Mentimeter appears as the media that can increase students' progress in learning English and makes them more interactive. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was a significant influence of using Mentimeter towards students’ mastery in simple past tense at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 23 Bandar Lampung. This research used quasi-experimental as a methodology with three treatments for each class. The population of this research were the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 23 Bandar Lampung where two classes were taken as samples of this research. The samples were 8F as the experimental class with 30 students and 8A as the control class, which consisted of 28 students. Mentimeter was applied in the experimental class meanwhile lecturing technique in the control class. The researcher exercised pre-test and post-test as the instruments to collect the data. The instruments used multiple choices with 35 items for pre-test and 34 items validated post-test. The data obtained from the pre-test and the post-test of both classes were analyzed after conducting the treatments. The researcher used independent sample t-test for a hypothetical test after confirming that the data was normally distributed, and the variance was homogeneous. The result of data analysis revealed that the sig (2-tailed) is 0.000, which equals sig. < α. Considering the hypotheses above, Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Thus, the researcher concluded that Mentimeter had ii a significant influence on students’ mastery in simple past tense at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 23 Bandar Lampung.
