Abstract
ABSTRACT Farmers face various problems such as low coffee production at the farmer level, lack of motivation for new planting, and insufficient efforts to increase production. This study aims to analyze the role of social capital in income disparities among coffee farmers in Kenali Village, Belalau District, West Lampung Regency, from the perspective of Islamic economics. Social capital, which includes elements of trust, social networks, and social norms, is considered an important factor influencing income distribution among farmers. The Grand Theory used is Social Capital Theory. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation. The results show that although social relationships among farmers are relatively strong, reflected in trust, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and informal networks, access to formal networks such as cooperatives and Islamic financial institutions remains uneven. Furthermore, income disparities are influenced by variations in land ownership, unequal access to agricultural information and technology, and differing levels of involvement in the coffee economic chain. From the perspective of Islamic economics, this condition indicates that the implementation of values such as justice (‘adl), mutual assistance (ta‘awun), and social protection (takaful ijtima’i) is not yet optimal. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen social capital based on the principle of consultation (syura), improve Islamic economic literacy among farmers, and provide fair access to business financing through Islamic financial institutions. In conclusion, informal social relationships among coffee farmers are strong, but access to formal networks and Islamic financial institutions remains limited due to group exclusivity. Income disparities are influenced by land ownership, access to information and technology, and involvement in the economic chain. The implementation of Islamic economic principles such as justice, mutual assistance, and social protection is not yet optimal. Strengthening social capital based on consultation, enhancing Islamic economic literacy, improving access to Islamic financing, and revitalizing mutual cooperation in downstream activities are key to achieving fair and sustainable farmer welfare.
