Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing is one of the essential language skills that students at the junior high school level are expected to master. However, in practice, many students struggle with writing tasks, particularly in choosing appropriate vocabulary and constructing grammatically correct sentences. One of the key factors influencing students' writing performance is the reference tools they use, such as dictionaries. In today’s digital era, students have access to both electronic dictionaries (e-dictionaries) and traditional printed dictionaries. Each type has its own advantages and limitations, yet few studies have specifically investigate the comparative effectiveness of these tools in enhancing students’ writing skills, especially at the junior secondary level. Therefore, this study aims to compare the effectiveness of e dictionaries and printed dictionaries in improving the writing skills of Grade 7 students at SMP Negeri 5 Bandar Lampung. This study employ a quantitative approach with a quasi experimental design. The participants consist of two purposively select Grade 7 classes, with one serving as the experimental group and the other as the control group. The experimental group use e dictionaries during writing activities, while the control group used printed dictionaries. The study conduct over four weeks, with writing sessions held twice a week. Pre-tests and post-tests are administer to assess students’ writing performance, focusing on vocabulary usage, sentence structure, and coherence. Statistical analysis conduct to determine significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores of the two groups. Additionally, classroom observations carry out to examine how students interact with the dictionaries during the writing process. The results reveal a significant difference in the writing improvement of students who use e-dictionaries compare to those who use printed dictionaries. The experimental group show greater progress in terms of using varied and accurate vocabulary, constructing better-structure sentences, and achieving improve coherence in their writing. These improvements support by the ease of access, faster word search capabilities, and additional features offer by ii e-dictionaries that help students better understand word meanings and usage. The findings suggest that e-dictionaries are more effective than printed dictionaries in supporting the development of writing skills among junior high school students. Consequently, English teachers are encourage to integrate e-dictionaries into writing instruction, particularly within technology-enhance learning environments. This study also opens opportunities for further research on the use of e dictionaries in other language skills, such as reading and speaking. Keywords: comparative, e-dictionary, printed dictionary
