Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Build-A Sentence Cubes Game in teaching English grammar, particularly the simple present tense, to seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Banjit. The research focuses on assessing whether this interactive game effects students' ability to construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences correctly. By employing and engaging learning method, the study explores an innovative approach to address common challenges in grammar instruction. A quasi-experimental design was adopted, with two groups participating: an experimental group (21 students) taught using the Build-A-Sentence Cubes Game and a control group (23 students) taught using English coursebook. A validated multiple-choice test was used as the research instrument. Data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, and a t-test to compare the groups' performance. The intervention involved three sessions centered on forming simple present tense sentences. The experimental group demonstrated significant improvement, with average scores rising from 50.4 (pretest) to 68.1 (posttest), whereas the control group showed only a slight increase from 47.7 to 52.7. Statistical analysis produced a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), These results indicate that the Build-A-Sentence Cubes Game was effective in teaching the simple present tense to seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Banjit in the second semester.
