Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF SEXIST LANGUAGE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK “STOP BULLYING NOW” PUBLISHED BY MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND CULTURE By: YULIANA SARI Sexism in education often appears subtly, including through illustrations and language use in textbooks. For instance, women are frequently given less visual representation and portrayed in passive roles, while men are shown as active and dominant figures. As a learning tool, textbooks significantly shape students' linguistic, cultural, and communicative understanding, especially in learning English as a foreign language. This research aims to analyze the presence of sexist language in the English textbook Stop Bullying Now, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This study employed a qualitative research design with qualitative content analysis to identify the forms of sexist language in the textbook. The stages of analysis included data identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion. The findings revealed 18 instances of sexist language, which were categorized into five types: 11 instances of “man as standard,” 2 of “women are different,” 3 of “non-human terms,” 1 of “negative words,” and 1 of “sex-role descriptors.” The representation of male characters was found to be more dominant than that of female characters throughout the textbook Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the textbook Stop Bullying Now still contains traces of sexist language, which may influence learners' perceptions of gender roles. These results highlight the need for more gender-sensitive materials in educational contexts to support inclusive learning environments Keywords: Analysis, Culture, Education, Linguistic; Sexist Language; Textbook
