Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the problems faced by eleventh-grade students at SMAN 16 Bandar Lampung in learning English speaking skills and identifies the factors contributing to these difficulties. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through focus group discussions, documentation, and classroom observations. In analyzed the data used Condentation, description and conclusion drawing. The analysis reveals that students encounter several challenges, including a lack of vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, fear of making mistakes, low confidence, anxiety, and confusion, which hinder their fluency and clear expression in spoken English. Additionally, the findings indicate that these issues are further compounded by factors such as inhibition due to fear of judgment, limited opportunities for practice, and challenges in mastering grammar and sentence construction. The prevalent emphasis on reading and writing over speaking activities has also contributed to the weakening of verbal communication skills. Based on these results, the study recommends that educators create a more supportive learning environment, introduce interactive speaking activities, and encourage regular practice to enhance students’ confidence and fluency in English.
