Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research to analyze students' problems and the strategies they use to solve problems when learning speaking. The purpose of this research is to describe the problems and strategies of students in learning to speaking through dialog in Ma'had al-Jami'ah. This research is a explanatory sequential mixed method research. Data collection instruments in this research used questionnaires and interviews to analyze students' speaking problems and identify strategies used by students, and documentation as a supporting instrument. The subjects of this research were fourth semester students at Ma'had al-Jami'ah. The questionnaires were distributed to the students, then followed by conducting interviews to obtain in-depth information. The results of this research found that there are three problems experienced by students in speaking such as inhibition, nothing to say, and the use of mother-tongue, are included in the students’ problems. There are eight strategies that students use to solve this problem. These strategies include; avoiding communication, adjusting the message, using phrases, using approximations, creating new words, switching to mother tongue, using non-linguistic resources and seeking help.
