Abstract
ABSTRACT English Education Department students at State Islamic University Raden Intan Lampung are required to translate their theses from Indonesian into English, including their thesis abstracts. However, in the translation process, many students face various difficulties in translating, that can affect the accuracy and clarity of the translation results. Therefore, this research aims to identify the difficulties faced by students in translating their thesis abstracts and the second aim was to found out the strategies used by students in translating thesis abstracts. A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the difficulties faced by students in translating thesis abstracts. The data were collected by questionnaire and interview. The subject of this research was English Education students in 2019 academic year at State Islamic University Raden Intan Lampung that consist of 15 students who had completed their theses. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. The theory of J. C. Catford was used to analyze the difficulties in translating thesis abstracts, and the theory of Mona Baker was used to analyze the strategies in translating thesis abstracts. The results of the research showed that the main difficulty experienced by students was in finding appropriate vocabulary equivalents, where students struggled to choose the correct English words that accurately represented the meaning of the original Indonesian terms. Other difficulties, such as sentence structure, scientific terms, and multiple meaning words, were also identified but occurred less frequently. To overcome difficulties when translating abstracts, the most widely used translation strategies were translation by paraphrase using related words and translation by a more general word. These strategies were favored because they allowed students to retain the original meaning while ensuring the translation remained clear and natural in English. These findings indicate that students tend to adopt flexible and adaptive strategies to bridge the linguistic and cultural gap between Indonesian and English. By understanding and applying appropriate translation strategies when students face translation difficulties, students can produce a thesis abstract that is more accurate and easier for readers to understand.
