Abstract

ABSTRACT Vocabulary is very important in learning English because it helps students improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. However, many students have difficulty learning vocabulary because of ineffective teaching methods and a lack of motivation. One way to help students learn vocabulary better is by using the Frontloading Strategy, which introduces important words before students read a text or start a lesson. This study aims to analyze how teachers use the Frontloading Strategy to teach vocabulary to eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Belalau and to find out the problem of the use of frontloading strategy to the students' vocabulary learning faced by the teacher. The method of this research was qualitative research. The instruments of this research were observation and interviews. The researcher observed the process of teaching learning and analyzing the data namely data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The research findings show that the teacher used the Frontloading Strategy by introducing vocabulary at the beginning of the lesson, encouraging students to predict and explore word meanings collaboratively, and reinforcing the vocabulary through follow-up activities like group discussions and presentations. The main problems in applying the Frontloading Strategy include time constraints, passive student participation, mismatched vocabulary levels, inconsistent practice, and diverse vocabulary knowledge among students. The teacher addressed these issues by prioritizing essential vocabulary, using varied teaching aids, differentiating instruction, and organizing group work to support peer learning.
